Fresha alternatives for Canadian hair salons: real costs compared in 2026

Fresha is everywhere in Canada: salons in Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary and Halifax list their availability on it, and for years the platform marketed itself as completely free. If you are shopping for booking software for your hair salon, Fresha is probably on your list, and so are a dozen comparison pages that still describe the old free model. Before you sign anything, two things deserve a careful look: Fresha now runs on subscriptions with usage fees on top, and its marketplace new-client fee is in a strange in-between state, with the pricing page showing it as free while the help centre still documents it in full. Both are better understood before you join than after.

This article is published on the blog of ViteUneCoupe, a free online booking system for hair salons with 0% commission. We are not neutral, but we play fair: every fact below was checked on the vendor's own pages, with the date of the check, we say plainly what we could not verify from outside Canada, and we openly credit what Fresha does better than us. For a side-by-side view of the whole Canadian market, our comparison of hair salon booking software for Canada covers every major player.

Is Fresha still free in 2026?

No. Checked in October 2026, Fresha's official pricing page lists two subscription plans, each after a 7-day trial:

  • Independent, for a one-person business with a single calendar column;
  • Team, priced per bookable team member per month;
  • above 20 team members, a custom-priced Enterprise offer.

Here is an honesty note few comparison pages make. Fresha's pricing page detects the visitor's country and shows that country's rates: there is no public Canadian-dollar price list you can consult from abroad. Our check was made from Europe, where the page displayed 14.95 euros per month for Independent, 9.95 euros per bookable team member for Team, 1.29% plus a fixed fee per online payment and about 0.10 per text beyond the free allowance. Those are not your numbers. Open fresha.com/pricing from your salon, note the Canadian-dollar amounts for every line (subscription, online payment, in-person payment, text message, terminal), and keep a dated screenshot. Displayed rates exclude sales tax, so GST or HST lands on top, depending on your province.

If a blog tells you "Fresha is completely free", you are reading content written under the old model. We found a Canadian guide published this year that still calls Fresha's core "genuinely free". That is not an accusation, comparison pages age badly, which is exactly why every figure deserves a source and a date.

The usage fees on top of the subscription

The subscription is only the first line of the bill. From the same pricing page, checked in October 2026 (amounts shown in our browsing currency; your Canadian rates may differ):

  • online payments: 1.29% plus a small fixed fee per transaction when a client prepays through Fresha;
  • in-person payments: 0.59% plus a fixed fee per transaction through Fresha's card solution, with an extra charge per tap-to-pay authorization and card terminals sold from about 119 per device;
  • texts and WhatsApp: 20 free messages per month (per team member on the Team plan), then roughly 0.10 per text and 0.09 to 0.23 per WhatsApp message; automated email notifications are free and unlimited;
  • marketing emails: 50 free per month, then about 0.02 per email; marketing texts about 0.14 each.

None of these fees is scandalous on its own. The point is the shape of the bill: it grows with your activity. A salon sending a text confirmation plus a text reminder for 300 appointments a month burns through a 20-message allowance in the first morning, and every prepayment, terminal tap and marketing send adds its own line. Our guide to the real cost of salon software for a Canadian salon works through that arithmetic across vendors.

One question the public page does not answer for Canada: how Interac debit is handled. Canadian clients love paying by debit, and merchant fees on Interac are normally far lower than on credit, a gap our guide to card payment processing for Canadian hair salons quantifies vendor by vendor. If you plan to run payments through Fresha, ask in writing for the Canadian processing grid, including Interac, before you commit.

The marketplace new-client fee, explained properly

This is the part most blogs get wrong, usually by quoting a percentage with no source. If you have read that Fresha charges 20% on a new client's first visit, do not repeat it: that figure belongs to an older model and nothing on Fresha's current pages states it. Here is what Fresha's own pages actually said when we checked them in October 2026, and they do not quite agree with each other.

On one hand, Fresha's official pricing page now lists the line "Fresha marketplace - New clients", still described as a "one-time fee applied to brand new clients who discover your business via the Fresha marketplace", as "Free" on both the Independent and Team plans, next to "Fresha marketplace - Returning clients: no fee ever applies to your returning clients". Read literally, that says the subscription now covers marketplace acquisition entirely.

On the other hand, Fresha's help centre article on marketplace new-client fees, checked the same day, still documents the fee in full and points back to the pricing page for the rate. Its rules, which you should know in case the fee applies to your account:

  • the fee targets only the first booking of a brand-new client who discovered your salon through the Fresha marketplace: existing clients, returning clients and imported clients are not concerned;
  • it is calculated on the value of the first completed appointment, excluding tips, add-on services at checkout and products, with a minimum for cheap or free services and a cap for expensive ones;
  • it applies even if you cancel the appointment yourself on the client's behalf, and even if the appointment is rescheduled or left unmanaged in your calendar;
  • it is deferred, not cancelled, if the client cancels online through their own Fresha account: it will be charged on their next booking;
  • it is non-refundable, and the only opt-out is to unlist your marketplace profile, which Fresha states disables all your online booking channels, including bookings through your own website and social media links;
  • the help article publishes no rate, minimum or cap: it refers you to the pricing page and your partner account.

Our honest reading: the pricing page says free, the help centre still describes a fee, and we cannot see a Canadian partner account from outside Canada. Before you list your salon, ask Fresha in writing whether the marketplace new-client fee currently applies to Canadian salons and, if so, the rate, minimum and cap in Canadian dollars, and keep the answer.

Two practical consequences either way. First, import your full client list before your profile goes live, otherwise a regular who happens to find you on Fresha counts as a new client. Second, decide deliberately whether you want marketplace exposure at all: if your chairs already fill through your own booking link and Google, the acquisition machine is solving a problem you do not have, and the question becomes whether the subscription alone is the right deal. That trade-off between direct bookings and marketplace acquisition deserves its own reflection before any signature.

What Fresha genuinely does well

Fresha did not become one of the biggest names in salon software by accident.

  • A very polished product. Calendar, client records, point of sale, inventory, marketing: the interface is modern, quick and pleasant on a phone. Few competitors match the finish.
  • A real marketplace presence in Canada. Salons from Montréal to Vancouver are listed, and a client hunting for a last-minute opening can genuinely find you there. Even where a new-client fee applies, paying once for real acquisition is a healthier model than a commission on everything.
  • No-show protection, available today. Fresha supports upfront payments and cancellation fees at booking. That is an honest concession from us: ViteUneCoupe's bank-card no-show protection is still in preparation. If empty chairs are your main problem, our playbook for reducing no-shows in a Canadian hair salon covers what works with and without card details.
  • Both official languages. Fresha's site and app are available in English and French, which matters if your clientele books in either language.

Two Canadian questions to ask before signing

Where do your clients' personal details go?

Fresha is an international company headquartered in London. A Canadian salon that hands its client file to any provider remains accountable for it under PIPEDA, and under provincial private-sector laws in British Columbia, Alberta and Québec. Foreign hosting is not forbidden, but you are expected to know where the data lives, protect it through the contract, and be transparent with clients. This applies to every vendor in this article, not just Fresha. Our guide to hair salon client records and privacy law in Canada turns that into a short checklist.

What will reminders really cost you?

The European version of the pricing page shows 20 free texts or WhatsApp messages per month, then per-message billing. Check the Canadian amounts from your account: with 150 appointments a month and one text reminder each, the "messages" line becomes a real budget item. Our comparison of appointment reminders for Canadian hair salons prices that trade-off, including what Canada's anti-spam law CASL means for promotional texts.

Fresha alternatives for Canadian hair salons, compared

Figures below were checked in October 2026 on each vendor's own site. Where a page localizes prices by country or does not label its currency, we say so instead of guessing.

Solution Subscription Commission on bookings Reminders Canadian pricing published?
Fresha Per bookable team member, 7-day trial 0% on returning clients; new-client fee shown as "Free" on the pricing page, still documented in the help centre: confirm in writing 20 free texts/month, then paid; unlimited free emails No public CAD grid viewable from abroad

Square Appointments Free plan; Plus $35 CAD/month; Premium $85 CAD/month per location 0% Free text and email reminders on every plan Yes, in CAD
Booksy $29.99/month + tax, +$20/month per extra staff member (currency not labelled on the Canadian page) 0% standard; opt-in Boost programme for new clients Included Partially
Vagaro Per bookable calendar; page geolocates, no CAD grid shown from abroad 0% standard; opt-in promo fees Included; marketing texts via add-ons No
GoRendezVous Essential $59/month + $20 per extra professional; Premium $69 + $25 (site showed USD from our location) 0% Unlimited email and SMS reminders Montréal company; confirm CAD on your screen
Mangomint $120 USD/month per location + $10 per user 0% Included; marketing add-on from $30/month USD only on the public page

ViteUneCoupe: the free plan that actually stays free

Since Fresha left the free ground, we might as well say it plainly: ViteUneCoupe occupies it. The free plan includes unlimited online bookings with 0% commission forever, a personalized booking page for your salon, your service catalogue, staff schedules, your client database and your calendar. No trial clock, no credit card at sign-up, no marketplace between you and your clients: the booking link is yours, on your Google Business Profile, your Instagram and your voicemail. Canadian phone numbers in +1 format work normally, and the interface is available in English and French.

The Standard plan, from 29 € excluding tax per month with no commitment, adds automatic emails (confirmation, reminder, thank-you) and calendar sync in ICS format with Apple, Google or Outlook. Bank-card no-show protection is coming soon in a Standard + Anti No-Show plan at 49 € excluding tax per month.

The honest limits for a Canadian salon: the subscription is billed in euros, not Canadian dollars (your card converts it; at 29 € a month the difference is small, but it is your call); reminders go by email, not text; and there is no cash register, no card capture and no marketplace. If what you want is a reliable online calendar with a bill of exactly zero and no cut of your work, that is precisely what it is for.

Square Appointments: published Canadian prices and free texts

Square is the most direct alternative for a salon that also wants payments, and it publishes a real Canadian grid: a Free plan with unlimited staff accounts, a custom booking site and automatic text and email reminders, then Plus at $35 CAD and Premium at $85 CAD per month per location, with in-person credit processing at 2.5% and Interac chip-and-tap at 0.75% plus 7 cents per transaction (checked in October 2026 on Square's Canadian Appointments page). No-show protection through prepayment or a card on file starts at Plus. The trade-off: Square is a generalist, booking is one module in a payments ecosystem rather than a tool built around salon workflows. Our guide to Square Appointments alternatives for Canadian hair salons digs into the details.

Booksy: strong in Canadian cities, check the currency line

Booksy is visible in Toronto, Mississauga, Calgary and most large Canadian cities. Its Canadian pricing page lists $29.99 per month plus tax, $20 per month per additional staff member and a free trial (checked in October 2026 on booksy.com's Canadian business pages), but the page does not label the currency, so confirm with Booksy whether those are Canadian or US dollars before you budget. Standard bookings carry no commission; Boost, the opt-in acquisition programme, charges a one-time fee on a new client's first visit, and you switch it on or off yourself. Ask for the current Canadian Boost terms in writing, the same reflex as with Fresha's new-client fee.

Vagaro comes up in nearly every North American comparison: calendar, point of sale, marketing and a consumer marketplace with no commission on standard bookings, priced per bookable calendar. Its pricing page geolocates: consulted from outside Canada in October 2026, it showed a British grid and no Canadian-dollar amounts, and we will not copy dollar figures from third-party blogs. If Vagaro interests you, open vagaro.com/pro/pricing from your salon and note what it shows for Canada.

GoRendezVous: the Montréal option, built first for health professionals

GoRendezVous is a Montréal company with clear published pricing: Essential at $59 per month for one professional plus $20 per additional professional, Premium at $69 plus $25, unlimited email and SMS reminders included, a 14-day trial and month-to-month terms (checked in October 2026 on gorendezvous.com's pricing page, which displayed US dollars from our location; as a Canadian company it serves Canadian clients, so confirm the CAD amounts on your screen). Local support and unlimited texts are real arguments. The honest reserve: GoRendezVous presents itself first as a tool for physiotherapists, massage therapists and other health professionals, not for hair salons, so test whether the service and staff setup fits a colour-and-cut workflow before moving your book. We compare it in depth in our guide to GoRendezVous alternatives for Canadian hair salons, and if a Canadian company matters to you, our round-up of salon booking software made in Canada lists the others.

Mangomint: the premium option, priced in US dollars

Mangomint operates in Canada and earns strong satisfaction ratings, with deep features: scheduling, forms, gift cards, reporting, multi-location support. Its public pricing is $120 USD per month per location plus $10 per user, with payment processing at 2.45% plus 15 cents in person, no contracts and free data transfer (checked in October 2026 on mangomint.com/pricing). For a small Canadian salon the US-dollar bill converts to a significant monthly cost, which places Mangomint at the opposite end of the market from a free calendar: worth it for larger teams that will use the depth, hard to justify for two chairs. Our dedicated guide to Mangomint alternatives for Canadian hair salons goes further.

Leaving Fresha without losing your client list

If your math points to a move, do not cancel anything until your data is out and your new booking link is live. Export your client list and appointment history first (Fresha's help centre documents client import and export), open your new booking page, then update the link on your Google Business Profile, Instagram and website before you close the old account. Give clients one clear message with the new link, and keep both systems alive through one full colour cycle so nobody falls between calendars. If you relied on Fresha's prepayment to protect your mornings, read our guide to cancellation policies and deposits for Canadian hair salons before you switch, so the protection does not lapse with the software; many Canadian salons bridge that gap manually with Interac e-Transfer deposits.

Frequently asked questions

Is Fresha free or paid in Canada?

Paid. Fresha runs on subscriptions: an Independent plan for one person and a Team plan priced per bookable team member, each after a 7-day trial, plus usage fees for payments and texts (checked in October 2026 on fresha.com). The marketplace new-client fee is shown as "Free" on the pricing page we checked, while the help centre still documents it: confirm your account's terms. The Canadian-dollar amounts display on fresha.com/pricing when consulted from Canada; the page is geolocated.

Does Fresha charge commission on my existing clients?

No. Fresha's pricing page states that no fee ever applies to your returning clients, and the help centre confirms that existing and imported clients never trigger the marketplace new-client fee (both checked in October 2026). Where the fee applies at all, it targets only the first booking of a brand-new client who discovered you on the Fresha marketplace, with a minimum and a cap, and it also applies if you cancel that appointment yourself.

How much is Fresha's new-client fee in Canada?

Unclear, and that is worth knowing. Checked in October 2026, Fresha's pricing page showed the marketplace new-client fee as "Free" on both plans, while the help centre article still documents the fee's rules without publishing a rate, minimum or cap. Ask Fresha in writing whether the fee applies to Canadian salons and for the current figures in Canadian dollars before listing your salon on the marketplace.

What is the best free alternative to Fresha for a Canadian hair salon?

Two serious options. Square Appointments has a free plan in Canadian dollars with text reminders included, tied to Square's payment processing. ViteUneCoupe has a free plan with no commission and no acquisition fees: unlimited bookings, a personalized booking page, client database and calendar; the trade-offs are email rather than text reminders, no payments, and an optional paid plan billed in euros.

Does Fresha protect against no-shows?

Yes, and it is a real strength: Fresha supports upfront payments and cancellation fees when clients book. ViteUneCoupe's equivalent, bank-card no-show protection, is coming soon in the Standard + Anti No-Show plan at 49 € excluding tax per month. Until then, reminders and a clear written policy already remove a large share of misses.

Why do so many sites still say Fresha is free?

Because Fresha was free for years and most comparison pages were never updated after the move to subscriptions; we found a Canadian guide published this year still describing the core as free. Trust only figures verified on the vendor's own site with a stated date, which is what this article does.
