Phorest alternatives for US hair salons: honest options with public prices

Written by Published on 14 min read
A hair salon owner at her front desk studies a shortlist of booking software options on a laptop while a stylist finishes a blowout behind her

Search "Phorest alternatives" and most of what ranks is written by Phorest's competitors, each one placing itself first. This article is not neutral either: it lives on the blog of ViteUneCoupe, a free appointment booking system for hair salons that charges 0% commission. The difference is method. Every competitor price below was checked on the vendor's own site in October 2026 and is dated, we say plainly when a figure is not published anywhere official, and we start with what Phorest genuinely does well, because if it fits your salon, the right move is to keep it.

Scope note: this guide is written for hair salon owners and independent stylists in the United States. Phorest's plans, SMS allowances and phone numbers differ by country, so if you are reading from the UK or Ireland, the details below will not match your local pricing page.

What Phorest does well (and why that matters)

Phorest deserves the first honest word. It is one of the few platforms on the US market that is genuinely salon-native rather than a general scheduler wearing a salon costume. It was built for hair and beauty businesses from day one, and it shows in the depth: appointment book, client history, automated marketing and client reactivation, loyalty, inventory, reporting, online booking and a branded salon app, all designed around how a multi-chair salon actually runs. Its own pricing page describes the plans as great for salons with three or more staff, which is an accurate self-portrait: Phorest is team software.

Phorest also publishes some of the better research in the industry. Its own data on no-shows, for example, reports that 62% of no-shows are simply forgotten appointments and that clients who book online no-show far less (according to Phorest's salon no-show research). A company that studies its customers' problems this seriously tends to build thoughtful software, and by most accounts Phorest has.

So this is not a takedown. If you run an established salon with four stylists, a front desk and a marketing budget, Phorest belongs on your shortlist. The reasons owners go looking for an alternative are narrower, and they are mostly about the buying experience, not the product.

Why US salon owners look for a Phorest alternative

When we checked Phorest's US pricing page in October 2026, here is what it showed:

  • Four plans, no prices. Starter, Grow, Complete Advantage and Elite are all quote-only: you request a quote or a callback to learn the monthly cost. Not a single dollar figure appears on the page. Third-party sites publish estimated Phorest prices and per-booking fees; we could not verify any of those numbers on Phorest's own site, so we will not repeat them as fact, and you should treat any unsourced "Phorest costs $X" claim with the same caution. The accurate statement is simply that Phorest's US pricing is not documented publicly.
  • No free trial. Phorest says this itself: there is no free trial, you get a personalized demo instead. That is a legitimate way to sell complex software, but it means you cannot open an account on a Tuesday night and quietly test it with your real service menu.
  • Texts are metered by plan. The Starter plan includes 1,000 free SMS a month, then 5 cents per additional text; higher tiers include larger allowances (5,000 on Grow, rising to 27,000 on the top plan). For a busy salon sending confirmations, reminders and marketing texts, the allowance you land on matters, so get your expected monthly text volume into the quote conversation.
  • Built for teams of three or more. By Phorest's own description. A solo stylist in a salon suite or a two-chair salon is paying for depth designed for a bigger operation.

None of this is hidden or dishonest on Phorest's part. Quote-based pricing is standard at the premium end of the market, and for a large salon negotiating a multi-year relationship, a tailored quote can even work in your favor. But it does mean three practical things: you cannot compare Phorest from your couch, you cannot try before you buy, and you cannot predict the renewal price from a public page. If any of those three is a dealbreaker, the alternatives below all publish their prices, and most offer a trial or a free plan.

If you want the wider market picture beyond this one vendor, our US comparison of hair salon booking software covers the full field, and our guide to the real cost of salon software explains how processing fees and add-ons change the math more than the sticker price does.

Who should stay with Phorest, and who should move

Stay (or sign) if: you run an established salon with three or more staff, you actively use marketing automation, loyalty and reactivation campaigns, you value a vendor that specializes in salons rather than serving every industry, and a sales conversation about price does not bother you. Phorest's feature depth is real, and switching software is never free in time and attention.

Look elsewhere if: you are solo or run a small team and most of Phorest's depth would sit unused; your budget needs a number you can see before a sales call; you want to trial software with real bookings before committing; or you simply want online booking and a clean client file without an enterprise-grade platform around it. For independent stylists renting a chair or a suite, there are tools scoped to exactly that: see our guide to booking software for salon suite renters.

Here are the alternatives, starting with our own so you can judge our bias directly.

ViteUneCoupe: free online booking with 0% commission, limits stated plainly

ViteUneCoupe is the opposite of quote-only: the free plan is public, permanent and actually free. It includes unlimited online bookings with 0% commission, forever, a personalized booking page for your salon, your service catalog with photos and prices, staff schedules, a client database and your calendar. No credit card to start, no trial countdown, no fee per booking. US phone numbers in +1 format store normally in the client file.

The Standard plan, at 29 € excluding tax per month with no commitment, adds automatic emails (booking confirmation, a reminder before the appointment, a thank-you after) and ICS calendar sync with Google Calendar, Apple Calendar or Outlook. Anti no-show protection with a card hold is coming soon in a Standard + Anti No-Show plan at 49 € excluding tax per month; it is not available today.

Now the limits, because Phorest refugees deserve the full list up front:

  • Reminders are email only. There are no text messages on any plan. US clients are used to appointment texts, and if text reminders are non-negotiable for your salon, we are the wrong tool. Every paid competitor on this page sends texts; our guide to appointment reminders for US hair salons covers what email alone can and cannot do.
  • The subscription is billed in euros, not dollars. US credit and debit cards pay euro invoices without drama (your bank may add a small foreign transaction fee), but if you want a US-dollar invoice from a US vendor, Mangomint or Square fit that requirement better.
  • No payments. No point of sale, no card on file, no deposits, no inventory, no marketing campaigns. ViteUneCoupe manages your appointments and your client list, not your money or your retail shelf. Coming from Phorest, that is a deliberate downsizing, not a like-for-like swap.

Who is it for? The solo stylist or small salon that looked at Phorest, realized it is built for a bigger operation, and whose actual problem is "clients cannot book online without calling me". That problem gets solved for $0, with no commission ever, and you find out in ten minutes instead of a sales call.

Vagaro: the widest feature set at a published per-calendar price

Vagaro is the most common name US owners weigh against Phorest, and it answers Phorest's two friction points directly: prices are public and there is a 30-day free trial. Checked on vagaro.com in October 2026: $23.99 per month for one bookable calendar, plus $10 per month for each additional calendar up to seven, after which extra staff are free, month to month with no contract. One automated appointment reminder per booking (text, email or push) is included; additional reminder touches sit in a paid add-on, as do several extras like forms and text marketing. Card processing through Vagaro runs 2.6% + $0.10 per swiped transaction for merchants under $4,000 a month in volume, and 2.29% + $0.19 at or above it. Vagaro also runs a large consumer marketplace, and standard marketplace bookings carry no commission.

Feature depth is the closest on this list to Phorest's: point of sale, inventory, memberships, packages, reporting. The trade-off is the per-calendar model (a five-stylist salon pays $63.99 before add-ons) and an interface with a real learning curve. We compare it in depth in our Vagaro alternatives guide for US hair salons.

Who is it for? The salon that wants Phorest-like breadth, a marketplace listing, and a price it can read on a public page.

GlossGenius: flat plans and polished client-facing booking

GlossGenius is beauty-specific like Phorest, but sold the modern way: public prices, 14-day trial, cancel anytime. Checked on glossgenius.com in October 2026: Standard at $28 per month billed monthly ($24 on annual billing), Gold at $56 monthly ($48 annual) covering up to nine team members and adding forms, waivers and a waitlist, and Platinum at $168 monthly ($148 annual) for larger teams. Payment processing is a flat 2.6% on every transaction, and there is no consumer marketplace and no commission. Text credits are included by plan.

The flat per-plan pricing is the headline against both Phorest and Vagaro: a team salon on Gold pays one price regardless of how many of its nine members take bookings. The flip side: it is lighter than Phorest on inventory and advanced marketing, and the flat 2.6% processing can cost more than interchange-plus rates on large average tickets.

Who is it for? The image-conscious small team that wants beauty-specific software with a knowable monthly bill and no sales call.

Mangomint: the premium alternative with unlimited texts

If what attracted you to Phorest was operational depth for a serious team salon, Mangomint is the alternative aimed at exactly that buyer, with public pricing. Checked on mangomint.com in October 2026: $120 per month per location plus $10 per user per month, no contracts, and a free trial. Card processing is 2.45% + $0.15 in person.

One Mangomint strength deserves a plain concession: unlimited text and email confirmations and reminders are included at no extra cost, confirmed in the pricing FAQ. Against Phorest's metered SMS allowances and against every per-text competitor, that is a genuine, verifiable advantage for a high-volume salon. The flip side is the entry price: $120 plus per-user fees is premium territory, and a two-person salon can find better value elsewhere. We weigh it fully in our Mangomint alternatives guide for US hair salons.

Who is it for? The established multi-staff salon that wants Phorest-grade operations with published pricing, modern design and texts that never run out.

Square Appointments: the free plan with payments built in

Square Appointments is the pragmatic pick when the budget answer to Phorest's quote is "zero". Checked on squareup.com in October 2026: a Free plan with online booking and automatic reminders, then Plus at $49 and Premium at $149 per location per month, with a 30-day trial on paid plans and no contract. Cancellation-policy and no-show-fee tools start at Plus. Square earns on processing: roughly 2.6% + $0.15 in person and 2.9% + $0.30 online when we checked, though Square adjusts rates over time, so confirm the live rate sheet before budgeting.

Square is not salon-specific, and that shows in the details (service-level nuance, salon reporting, retail depth are thinner than Phorest's). But the Free plan is real, the hardware is everywhere, and for a solo stylist it bundles scheduling and a card reader for no monthly fee.

Who is it for? The solo stylist or small salon that wants free scheduling plus payments from one US company, and accepts a generalist tool.

How to choose: three questions before you book any demo

1. How big is your team, honestly? Phorest and Mangomint are built for three or more staff and price accordingly. A solo stylist or duo gets more value from Square's free plan, GlossGenius Standard, or ViteUneCoupe's free plan, and loses almost nothing they would actually use.

2. What must the software do besides booking? If the answer includes point of sale, inventory and marketing automation, you are shopping Phorest, Vagaro and Mangomint. If the honest answer is "take bookings and keep my client list clean", paying enterprise prices for unused modules is the most common money leak in salon software.

3. What happens when you leave? Before signing anything, quote-only or not, ask in writing how you export your client list and appointment history, and what the vendor's data-deletion policy is once you go (your client records are your responsibility either way: see our guide to salon client records and privacy in the US). If a move is already underway, our walkthrough on switching salon booking software without losing appointments covers the export, the import and the overlap week.

One last honesty note: a quote-only vendor is not automatically overpriced, and a published price is not automatically fair. But a published price lets you compare five tools in an evening, and a free plan or a trial lets your actual front desk vote. That is the real reason most of the market has moved to transparent pricing, and the main thing Phorest asks you to give up.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Phorest cost in the US?

Phorest does not publish US prices: all four plans (Starter, Grow, Complete Advantage, Elite) are quote-only on phorest.com/us/pricing, checked in October 2026. Any specific dollar figure you see elsewhere is a third-party estimate, not an official price. Request a written quote and ask for the per-location cost, SMS allowance, setup fees and contract length in one document.

Does Phorest offer a free trial?

No. Phorest states on its own pricing page that it does not offer a free trial and provides a personalized demo instead (checked October 2026). If testing with real bookings matters to you, Vagaro and Square offer 30-day trials, GlossGenius 14 days, Mangomint a free trial, and ViteUneCoupe and Square both have permanently free plans.

Phorest vs Vagaro: which is better for a hair salon?

They overlap heavily in features; the buying experience differs most. Vagaro publishes its prices ($23.99 for one calendar, +$10 per extra calendar, checked October 2026), offers a 30-day trial and runs a consumer marketplace. Phorest is quote-only with no trial but is salon-specific throughout and strong on marketing automation. Teams that want to compare costs upfront usually start with Vagaro; salons that value a specialist vendor and accept a sales process shortlist Phorest.

What is the best Phorest alternative for a solo stylist or small salon?

Phorest describes its plans as built for salons with three or more staff, so solo and duo operations are usually better served elsewhere: ViteUneCoupe (free, 0% commission, email reminders only), Square Appointments (free plan with payments) or GlossGenius Standard at $28 per month are the natural fits, all checked October 2026.

Can I export my client data from Phorest when I switch?

Ask Phorest support for a client export before you commit to a move, and ask your new provider exactly which fields they can import (names, phone numbers, emails, visit history, notes). Get both answers in writing. This applies to every vendor on this page: the time to learn how the exit door opens is before you walk in.
