Phorest alternatives for Canadian hair salons: options with verified prices

Written by Published on 16 min read
A hair salon owner takes notes during a phone call at her front desk, laptop open, while a stylist applies colour behind her and snow falls on the street outside

Search "Phorest alternatives Canada" and most of what ranks is a software directory or a listicle written by one of Phorest's competitors, with itself in first place. This article is not neutral either: it lives on the blog of ViteUneCoupe, a free booking platform for hair salons with no commission, ever. The difference is method. Every competitor price below was checked on the vendor's own current page in October 2026 and is dated, we label the currency each time (and say so when a vendor does not), and we start with what Phorest genuinely does well, because if it fits your salon, the right move is to keep it.

Scope note: this guide is for hair salon owners and independent stylists in English-speaking Canada. If your salon is in Québec, your shortlist looks different because French-language software and support move to the front of the queue (Phorest's Canadian site has no French at all, as we detail below): see our French-language comparison of alternatives to GoRendezVous for hair salons, an article written in French.

What Phorest does well (and why Canadians shortlist it)

Phorest deserves the first honest word. It is one of the few platforms sold in Canada that is genuinely salon-native rather than a general scheduler wearing a salon costume: appointment book, client history, automated marketing and reactivation, loyalty, inventory, reporting, online booking and a branded salon app, built around how a multi-chair salon actually runs. Phorest also takes Canada seriously as a market. It maintains a dedicated Canadian site at phorest.com/ca with a Canadian phone number (a +1 437 Toronto-area line), and its FAQ states that every plan includes tailored setup and free data migration, with specialists moving your client records over from your current system. For a salon that dreads the switch itself, migration done for you is a real, concrete strength.

Phorest describes its plans as perfect for salons with three or more staff, which is an accurate self-portrait: this is team software, priced and built for established salons. None of what follows is a takedown. The reasons Canadian owners go looking for an alternative are narrower, and they are mostly about the buying experience, not the product.

Why Canadian salon owners look for a Phorest alternative

When we checked Phorest's Canadian pricing page in October 2026, here is what it showed:

  • Four salon plans, zero prices. Starter, Grow, Complete Advantage and Elite are all quote-only: you book a demo or request a quote to learn the monthly cost, and not a single dollar figure appears on the page. Third-party sites publish estimated Phorest prices; we could not verify any of them on Phorest's own site, so we will not repeat them, and neither should you. The accurate statement is simply that Phorest's Canadian pricing is not documented publicly. That is a fact about how Phorest sells, not an accusation: quote-based pricing is normal at the premium end of the market. But it means you cannot compare Phorest against anything without a sales call.
  • No free trial. Phorest says this itself on the pricing page: no free trial, a full product demo instead. Legitimate for complex software, but you cannot open an account on a Tuesday night and quietly test it with your real service menu.
  • Texts are metered by plan. The Canadian pricing page lists SMS allowances per plan: 500 free messages a month then 6 cents each on Grow, 2,500 then 5.5 cents on Complete Advantage, 10,000 on Elite, with Starter described only as a competitive rate. The cent figures carry no currency label on the page, so get the rate and the currency confirmed in your quote. For a busy salon sending confirmations, reminders and marketing texts, the allowance you land on matters.
  • No French. The Canadian site's language switcher offers the US, UK, Ireland, Australia, German, Dutch and Finnish versions, but no French (checked in October 2026). For a salon in Ottawa, Moncton or anywhere with francophone clients and staff, that is worth knowing before the demo.
  • Built for teams of three or more, by Phorest's own description. A solo stylist or a two-chair salon is paying for depth designed for a bigger operation.

If any of those is a dealbreaker, the alternatives below all publish their prices, and most offer a trial or a free plan. For the wider market picture beyond this one vendor, our Canadian comparison of hair salon booking software covers the full field, and our guide to the real cost of salon software in Canada explains how processing fees, per-stylist fees and message meters change the math more than the sticker price does.

Who should stay with Phorest, and who should move

Stay (or sign) if: you run an established salon with three or more staff, you will actually use marketing automation, loyalty and reactivation campaigns, you value a vendor that specializes in salons, the included data migration solves a problem you were dreading, and a sales conversation about price does not bother you. Phorest's depth is real, and switching software is never free in time and attention.

Look elsewhere if: you are solo or run a small team and most of Phorest's depth would sit unused; your budget needs a number in Canadian dollars you can see before a sales call; you want to trial software with real bookings before committing; your clientele books in French as well as English; or you simply want online booking and a clean client file without an enterprise-grade platform around it. Independent stylists renting a chair have their own shortlist: see our guide to booking software for independent hair stylists in Canada.

Here are the alternatives, starting with our own so you can judge our bias directly.

ViteUneCoupe: free online booking with 0% commission, limits stated plainly

ViteUneCoupe is the opposite of quote-only: the free plan is public, permanent and actually free. It includes unlimited online bookings with 0% commission, forever, a personalized booking page for your salon, your service catalogue with durations and prices, per-stylist schedules and absences, a client database with visit history, and a calendar that blocks double bookings. No credit card to start, no trial countdown, no fee per booking. The interface exists in English and French on both the salon side and the client side, and Canadian +1 phone numbers store normally in the client file.

The Standard plan, at 29 € excluding tax per month with no commitment, adds automatic emails (booking confirmation, a reminder before the appointment, a thank-you after) and calendar sync in ICS format with Google, Apple or Outlook calendars. Anti no-show protection with a bank card hold is coming soon in a Standard + Anti No-Show plan at 49 € excluding tax per month; it is not available today.

Now the limits, because Phorest refugees deserve the full list up front:

  • Reminders are email only. There are no text messages on any plan. Canadian clients are used to appointment texts, and if texts are non-negotiable for your salon, we are the wrong tool: GoRendezVous, Square and salonMonster below all send them. Our guide to appointment reminders for Canadian hair salons covers what email alone can and cannot do.
  • The subscription is billed in euros, not Canadian dollars, so the exact amount on your statement moves with the exchange rate and your bank may add a foreign transaction fee. Service prices on the booking page display with a € symbol, and the app runs on a single European time zone rather than your local Canadian one. If you want a CAD invoice from a Canadian company, GoRendezVous and salonMonster fit that requirement better.
  • No payments. No point of sale, no card on file, no deposits, no Interac, no inventory, no marketing campaigns. ViteUneCoupe manages your appointments and your client list, not your money. Coming from Phorest, that is a deliberate downsizing, not a like-for-like swap.

Who is it for? The solo stylist or small salon that looked at Phorest, realized it is built for a bigger operation, and whose actual problem is "clients cannot book online without calling me". That problem gets solved for $0, with no commission ever, and you find out in ten minutes instead of a sales call.

Square Appointments: Canadian prices on the page and payments built in

Square is the pragmatic pick when the budget answer to Phorest's quote is "zero", and one of the few international vendors that publishes a real Canadian grid. Checked on squareup.com/ca in October 2026: a Free plan at $0 for a single location with text and email reminders included, then Plus at $35 and Premium at $85 CAD per location per month, with free trials on the paid plans. Square earns on processing, at published Canadian rates: 2.5% for cards in person, 0.75% + 7¢ per Interac debit transaction, 2.8% + 30¢ online and 3.3% + 15¢ for manually keyed cards.

Square is not salon-specific, and that shows in the details: colour formulas, processing-time scheduling and salon reporting are thinner than Phorest's. But the free plan is real, Interac is handled natively, and the hardware is everywhere in Canada. Our full breakdown is in Square Appointments alternatives for Canadian hair salons.

Who is it for? The solo stylist or small salon that wants free scheduling plus payments and Interac from one ecosystem, with every price in Canadian dollars on a public page.

GoRendezVous: the Canadian vendor with unlimited texting

GoRendezVous is a Montréal company, genuinely bilingual in English and French on both the software and the support side. Checked on its pricing page in October 2026: Essential at $59 CAD per month plus $20 per additional professional, Premium at $69 plus $25, month to month with a 14-day free trial and no credit card required. The headline against Phorest's metered SMS: unlimited email and text reminders are included, with Canadian mobile numbers covered at no extra charge and no meter to watch.

The flip side is the per-professional math: a four-stylist salon on Essential pays $59 + 3 × $20 = $119 CAD a month before tax, honest and predictable but far from cheap. We weigh it fully in our GoRendezVous alternatives guide for Canadian hair salons.

Who is it for? The salon that considers unlimited text reminders non-negotiable and wants a bilingual Canadian vendor billing in Canadian dollars.

salonMonster: hair-specific, Canadian-built, flat CAD pricing

salonMonster is the most Phorest-shaped of the Canadian options in spirit: built for hair salons specifically, by a small British Columbia company, since 2010. Checked on salonmonster.com in October 2026: from $30 CAD per month for a single stylist, no contracts, a 14-day trial with no card, automated email and text reminders included, no commission on bookings, client data on Canadian servers, and free migration of your clients, colour formulas and appointment history from your old system. That last point matters here: free migration is one of Phorest's genuine selling points, and salonMonster matches it at a published price.

Honest limits: it is a small company without a consumer marketplace, so it brings no new clients by itself, and the product is English-first. For the full landscape of Canadian-built options and what "Canadian data residency" actually buys you, see our guide to salon booking software made in Canada.

Who is it for? The independent stylist or small salon that wants hair-specific software, a Canadian dollar invoice and Canadian servers at a flat, visible price.

Mangomint: Phorest-grade depth with published pricing

If what attracted you to Phorest was operational depth for a serious team salon, Mangomint is the alternative aimed at exactly that buyer, and it serves Canada with documented Canadian merchant onboarding. Checked on mangomint.com in October 2026: $120 per month per location plus $10 per user per month, no contracts, a free trial, and free data transfer included in onboarding. One caution a Canadian buyer should not skip: the pricing page does not label its currency, so confirm whether those figures are US or Canadian dollars before budgeting (at a recent exchange rate the difference on $120 a month is not small).

One strength deserves a plain concession: unlimited text and email confirmations and reminders are included at no extra cost, stated on the pricing page itself. Against Phorest's metered allowances, that is a genuine, verifiable advantage for a high-volume salon. The entry price puts it in premium territory, which we unpack in our Mangomint alternatives guide for Canadian hair salons.

Who is it for? The established multi-staff salon that wants Phorest-grade operations with published pricing and texts that never run out, and will pin the currency down in writing.

Vagaro: the marketplace all-rounder with a Canadian page

Vagaro maintains a dedicated Canadian pricing page. Checked on vagaro.com/en-ca in October 2026: $35 per month for one bookable calendar, a 30-day free trial, cancellation anytime without fees, and unlimited appointment reminders listed as included. Two cautions. First, the $35 on the Canadian page carries no explicit currency label, and the same page prices each additional bookable calendar at $10 US per month up to seven (free beyond that), a US dollar figure sitting inside a Canadian offer: get your total in Canadian dollars confirmed before budgeting a team. Second, the quoted price is the start, not the total; text marketing, the website builder and payments are add-on modules.

What Vagaro has that Phorest does not: a large consumer marketplace that can genuinely put new faces in the chair. What it shares with Phorest: breadth a small salon may never use. Our Vagaro alternatives guide for Canadian hair salons goes deeper.

Who is it for? The salon that wants marketplace visibility plus an all-in-one toolkit, and will pin down every add-on price in Canadian dollars first.

A note on GlossGenius

US articles about Phorest alternatives routinely recommend GlossGenius, and Canadian readers then hit a wall: its own terms restrict the service to the United States. It is not an option for a Canadian salon, whatever the listicles say; our guide to GlossGenius alternatives for Canadian hair salons covers what to use instead.

How to choose: three questions before you book any demo

1. How big is your team, honestly? Phorest and Mangomint are built for three or more staff and price accordingly. A solo stylist or duo gets more value from Square's free plan, salonMonster at $30 CAD, or ViteUneCoupe's free plan, and loses almost nothing they would actually use.

2. What is the all-in monthly cost in Canadian dollars? Not the sticker: the subscription plus per-stylist fees, plus texts past the allowance, plus payment processing, plus your province's sales tax, converted to CAD when the vendor bills in another currency. A quote-only price makes this arithmetic impossible from your couch; insist the written quote states the currency, the SMS allowance and every add-on.

3. What happens when you leave? Before signing anything, ask in writing how you export your client list and appointment history, and what happens to the data afterwards; your client records are your responsibility under Canadian privacy law either way, as our guide to salon client records and privacy in Canada explains. Phorest moving your data in for free is a strength; make sure the door opens as easily on the way out, there and everywhere else. If a move is already underway, our walkthrough on switching salon booking software without losing appointments covers the export, the import and the overlap week.

One last honesty note: a quote-only vendor is not automatically overpriced, and a published price is not automatically fair. But a published price in a labelled currency lets a Canadian owner compare five tools in an evening, and a free plan or a trial lets your actual front desk vote. That is the main thing Phorest asks you to give up.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Phorest cost in Canada?

Phorest does not publish Canadian prices: the Starter, Grow, Complete Advantage and Elite plans are all quote-only on phorest.com/ca/pricing, checked in October 2026. Any specific figure you see elsewhere is a third-party estimate, not an official price. Request a written quote and ask for the monthly cost in Canadian dollars, the SMS allowance, setup fees and contract length in one document.

Does Phorest offer a free trial in Canada?

No. Phorest's Canadian pricing page states it does not offer a free trial and provides a full product demo instead (checked October 2026). If testing with real bookings matters, Vagaro offers a 30-day trial, GoRendezVous and salonMonster 14 days without a card, Mangomint a free trial, and ViteUneCoupe and Square Appointments both have permanently free plans.

Is Phorest available in French for Canadian salons?

Not on its Canadian site: when we checked phorest.com/ca in October 2026, the language switcher offered no French option and all content was in English. A salon serving francophone clients should raise this in the demo, or shortlist bilingual tools such as GoRendezVous or ViteUneCoupe (both work in English and French).

What is the best Phorest alternative for a solo stylist in Canada?

Phorest describes its plans as built for salons with three or more staff, so solo and duo operations are usually better served elsewhere: ViteUneCoupe (free, 0% commission, email reminders only), Square Appointments (free plan with payments and Interac at Canadian rates) or salonMonster ($30 CAD per month, hair-specific, text reminders included), all checked in October 2026.

Which Phorest alternatives bill in Canadian dollars?

Among the tools in this comparison: Square Appointments publishes a CAD grid ($0, $35, $85), and the Canadian companies GoRendezVous and salonMonster price in Canadian dollars. Mangomint's page shows no currency label and Vagaro's Canadian page mixes an unlabelled $35 with extra calendars priced in US dollars, so confirm both in writing. ViteUneCoupe bills in euros.
