Kitomba alternatives for hair salons in New Zealand: the 2026 guide

A New Zealand hair salon owner compares booking software options on a laptop at her reception desk while a stylist works on a client's colour behind her

If you run a hair salon in New Zealand, Kitomba is not just another option on a list: it is the hometown heavyweight. Founded in Wellington in 2002, head office still in the capital, with teams across New Zealand and Australia, its about page says thousands of salons, spas and clinics run on it, checked in October 2026. New Zealand is its home market. Local support in your time zone, GST handled natively, EFTPOS integrated: there are good reasons so many Kiwi salons never looked elsewhere.

And yet here you are, reading about alternatives. Usually it is one of three things: a quote that crept up at renewal, paying for a full point-of-sale suite when what you really use is the appointment book, or simply not being able to find out what Kitomba costs without going through a sales conversation, because Kitomba publishes no software prices at all.

This guide lives on the blog of ViteUneCoupe, a free online booking system for hair salons with no commission, so we are not pretending to be a neutral referee. What we promise instead is discipline: every claim about Kitomba below was checked on kitomba.com itself in October 2026, every alternative's price was checked on the vendor's own site the same month, and we say plainly when a figure is not published or could not be confirmed in New Zealand dollars from where we browse. We also say plainly where ViteUneCoupe is not a like-for-like replacement, because for some Kitomba salons it is not.

What Kitomba costs in New Zealand: you have to ask

Here is the first thing a New Zealand salon owner comparing options needs to know: Kitomba does not publish its software prices, not even in its home market. Checked on Kitomba's pricing page in October 2026, the page lists its packages, Lite, Grow and Pro (each in a PLUS version with Kitomba Pay), plus an unlimited-staff Enterprise tier, but no dollar figure for any of them. Instead it invites you to "answer a few quick questions and get instant pricing tailored to your salon", or to book a demo where a Kitomba Business Consultant quotes you individually. The example packages are presented with "price per user based on 3 staff", so the quote scales with your team.

What the pricing page does disclose, as of the same check:

  • The packages cover the full suite: online booking, point-of-sale with integrated EFTPOS, stock management, appointment reminders, client cards and history, loyalty, staff targets and marketing tools, with higher tiers adding waitlists, repeat appointments, timesheets, Xero integration and AI marketing.
  • Complimentary SMS is a promotion: the page's fine print says "complimentary SMS is based on the number of users and is a promotion for a limited time". It is not a permanent plan feature, so ask what texts cost once the promotion ends before you sign.
  • Several things cost extra: data migration ("additional charges apply"), the REACH.ai marketing add-on ("pricing applies and is in addition to Kitomba software fees"), and Xero's own subscription for the accounting integration.
  • Kitomba Pay is the one place Kitomba publishes New Zealand dollar figures: checked on the Kitomba Pay page in October 2026, in-person payments cost 1.7% per transaction including GST, online payments 2.7% + 30 cents, Afterpay 6%, international cards 3.8%, with terminal cost "from $0/month" in New Zealand and next-business-day settlement. That free terminal is a genuine home-market perk: the same page lists Australian terminals from $32.95 AUD per month.

So the honest summary is: the payments side is transparent and, for New Zealand, rather good; the software side is quote-only. That is not a scandal, plenty of full-suite vendors work the same way, but it has a practical consequence. You cannot compare Kitomba's price against anything without going through its sales process, and you cannot check whether the quote you accepted three years ago still matches what a new salon in Christchurch or Tauranga pays today.

Read the terms before you sign: the cancellation clause

Kitomba's published terms and conditions, checked in October 2026, contain a clause every owner should read before signing a quote. If the client cancels the contract, the client "shall be liable for any loss incurred by the Seller including, but not limited to, all fees due for the remainder of the period of the contract". In plain language: if your quote is tied to a contract period and you leave early, you can be charged the rest of the term. The terms state no standard minimum term, which means the term is whatever your individual agreement says, so ask for the contract length and exit terms in writing, and keep the document. For New Zealand clients the terms are governed by New Zealand law and subject to the jurisdiction of New Zealand courts, which at least means any dispute happens on home ground.

Two more details from the same terms are worth knowing. SMS is subject to a fair-use policy: the "Unlimited Plus" plan is defined as 10,000 messages per calendar month, unused messages do not roll over, and exceeding the limits can mean charges or suspension. And the terms place the responsibility for retaining copies of your information on you, the client: "The Client must retain a copy of all information provided to the Seller". We did not find a data-export guarantee in the terms themselves; a client-list export exists in the product according to third-party migration guides, but test it from your own account before you give notice, not after.

There is a pleasing irony in Kitomba's own marketing here: the Kitomba Pay page advertises "No long-term contract. Stay because you love it. Not because you're stuck for 36 months." Apply exactly that standard to the software quote you are offered.

What Kitomba genuinely does well

Fairness first, because many New Zealand salons are on Kitomba for good reasons, and in its home market the case is strongest:

  • Salon-specific depth. Appointments, POS with integrated EFTPOS, stock, staff targets, timesheets, loyalty, online booking: this is a complete salon management suite built for hair and beauty, not a generic booking tool bolted onto a calendar.
  • Benchmark. Kitomba's Benchmark reporting compares your rebooking rate, retail sales and revenue against anonymised industry averages for your country. For a data-minded owner in a market as small as New Zealand, seeing how your salon tracks against other Kiwi salons is a real reason to stay; no small competitor offers anything like it.
  • Unlimited local support. Phone, email and chat support at no extra cost, from a team that actually works in your time zone and knows what EFTPOS and GST mean without explanation.
  • The home-market payments deal. Published NZD rates, GST inclusive, with terminal rental from $0 per month in New Zealand. If you want payments and software from one local vendor, that is a strong package.

If you run a multi-staff salon in Auckland or Wellington that uses the POS, the stock module, the targets and Benchmark every week, Kitomba is probably earning its quote. The rest of this guide is for everyone else.

When a Kiwi salon outgrows Kitomba, or over-pays for it

The pattern is rarely "Kitomba got worse". It is "the salon's needs got simpler than the suite". Three situations where the quote stops making sense:

  • You pay for a suite and use a diary. If your stylists book, remind and rebook, but the stock module sits empty and your payments already run happily through an existing EFTPOS terminal, you are paying full-suite money for booking-tool usage. Our guide to the real cost of salon software in New Zealand walks through how to total what you actually use.
  • You cannot price-check it. With no published grid, the only way to know whether your renewal is fair is to request a fresh quote as if you were a new salon, or to compare against vendors who publish. Quote-based pricing favours the party that sees every quote, and that is not you.
  • The exit maths scares you. A clause that makes you liable for the remainder of the term turns "we should look around" into "next year, maybe". That is precisely when it is worth knowing that several credible alternatives are month-to-month.

The alternatives, prices checked in October 2026

Every figure below was verified on the vendor's own website in October 2026. A warning that matters more in New Zealand than almost anywhere: most pricing pages geo-localise, and our tools browse from Europe, so several vendors showed us euros or US dollars instead of New Zealand dollars. Where we could not confirm an NZD figure we say so rather than guessing: confirm the grid from a New Zealand connection before signing anything. For the full market tour, our comparison of hair salon booking software in New Zealand covers the whole field.

Software Published price Reminders POS / payments Pricing transparency
Kitomba (Wellington) Not published, quote only SMS (promotional allowance, fair-use limits) + email Full POS, Kitomba Pay 1.7% in person incl. GST, terminal from $0/month (NZD) Quote-based
ViteUneCoupe Free plan; Standard at 29 € excl. tax/month, billed in euros Email only (Standard plan); no SMS None Published
Timely (Dunedin) Page geo-localises; its structured data lists an NZ starting price of NZ$42/month SMS allowance per plan + email Via TimelyPay Published, confirm NZD grid locally
Fresha Shown to us in euros: €14.95 solo or €9.95 per team member/month; no NZD grid confirmed 20 free messages/month, then metered Integrated payments Published, geo-localised
Simple Salon (Melbourne) Shown to us in US dollars: Starter $20, Pro $34, Max $41/month, scaling by operators, capped at 7; region selector includes Australia / New Zealand SMS allowance on Pro/Max, then metered Integrations Published, currency selector
Ovatu Shown to us in US dollars: Neat $25, Loaded $38/month, + per extra staff member; no NZD grid confirmed Email included; SMS metered (~4c/message in the currency shown) Basic POS Published, confirm NZD locally

Notice what the table says about the central complaint: if opaque pricing is what bothers you about Kitomba, every alternative here publishes its prices, though you may have to fight a geo-localised page to read them in NZD. The details that matter, starting with our own tool so you know exactly where we stand.

ViteUneCoupe: free bookings, zero commission, and honest about what it is not

Let us be explicit about the comparison first: ViteUneCoupe is not a like-for-like Kitomba replacement. Kitomba is a full salon management suite; ViteUneCoupe is a booking system. There is no point-of-sale, no EFTPOS integration, no stock management, no payroll or rostering, no deposits, no waitlist, and no SMS: reminders are email only. If your salon leans on Kitomba's POS and stock every day, ViteUneCoupe alone will not run your front desk.

What it does, it does at a price Kitomba cannot match: the free plan gives you unlimited online bookings with 0% commission, permanently, a booking page under your salon's own name, your service menu, individual stylist schedules, a client database (New Zealand +64 mobile numbers work fine) and your calendar. No card, no trial clock, no per-staff seat fee, ever. The Standard plan, at 29 € excluding tax per month with no commitment, adds automatic emails (confirmation, reminder, thank-you) and ICS calendar sync with Apple, Google or Outlook calendars. Card-on-file no-show protection is coming soon in a Standard + Anti No-Show plan at 49 € excluding tax per month.

Two honest limits for Kiwi readers. The paid plans are billed in euros, not New Zealand dollars, so the amount on your statement moves with the exchange rate and your bank may add a foreign-transaction fee; the free plan, of course, is billed in nothing. And the interface is available in English and French, not a locally staffed support line in your time zone, which Kitomba genuinely offers. Who is it for? The salon or independent stylist whose diary is the expensive problem, whose payments already work fine on an existing EFTPOS terminal, and who wants the booking side to cost zero dollars and zero commission while keeping every published price in plain sight.

Timely: the Dunedin rival, with prices you can read

Timely is the obvious head-to-head, and it is a genuinely all-New-Zealand contest: Wellington against Dunedin. Timely is hair-and-beauty focused, widely used across the country, and, unlike Kitomba, publishes per-staff pricing. Its pricing page geo-localises, so from our connection it displayed other currencies, but the page's own structured data lists a New Zealand starting price of NZ$42 per month, checked in October 2026 on gettimely.com; plans are charged per bookable team member and include a monthly SMS allowance. Confirm the full NZD grid from a New Zealand connection. Timely covers most of what day-to-day Kitomba usage looks like, calendar, clients, reminders, payments via TimelyPay, without the quote process; what it lacks is Kitomba's full POS-and-stock depth and Benchmark. We compare it properly in our guide to Timely alternatives for New Zealand hair salons.

Fresha: the marketplace model, priced in a currency we could not pin down

Fresha runs the other model entirely: a consumer marketplace plus a per-team-member subscription. Checked on fresha.com's pricing page in October 2026, the subscription was shown to us at €14.95 per month solo or €9.95 per team member, with 20 free client messages a month then metered texting, integrated payments, no minimum commitment, and the statement that no fee ever applies to your returning clients. We could not confirm a New Zealand dollar grid from our connection, so check what currency a Kiwi salon is actually billed in, and what the marketplace and payment terms are for New Zealand, before signing. The full breakdown is in our guide to Fresha alternatives for New Zealand hair salons.

Simple Salon and Ovatu: the mid-weight options across the Tasman

Simple Salon, built in Melbourne, sits closer to Kitomba's shape than most booking tools: appointments, clients, SMS marketing, reporting. Checked on simplesalon.com's pricing page in October 2026, the page showed us US dollars (Starter $20, Pro $34, Max $41 per month, scaling with operator count and capped at the seven-operator price) with a region selector that includes "Australia / New Zealand", SMS allowances on Pro and Max then metered messages, a 14-day trial and "no contracts, no fixed-term, no sign-up fees". Confirm the NZD figures from a local connection.

Ovatu is the budget-friendly booking-first option: checked on ovatu.com's pricing page in October 2026, it showed us two plans in US dollars, Neat at $25 and Loaded at $38 per month for the first staff member plus a few dollars per additional one, with email reminders included, SMS metered at around 4 cents per message in the currency shown, a 30-day trial and no long-term commitment. No NZD grid was confirmed from our connection. Neither of these replaces Kitomba's full POS, but both publish month-to-month prices, which is half the reason you are reading this page.

Which profile suits which tool?

  • You use the POS, stock, targets and Benchmark weekly: stay on Kitomba, but request a fresh quote at renewal as if you were a new salon, and get your contract term and exit clause in writing.
  • You want New Zealand-built salon software without the quote process: Timely, confirming the NZD grid from a local connection.
  • You want the marketplace to bring new faces: Fresha, after confirming your billing currency and the New Zealand terms.
  • You want published month-to-month pricing in the middle of the market: Simple Salon or Ovatu, confirming NZD locally in both cases.
  • Your diary is the problem and your payments already work: ViteUneCoupe's free plan, 0% commission permanently, running alongside the EFTPOS terminal you already own, with email reminders on the Standard plan when you want them.

Before you leave Kitomba: export first, give notice last

The order of operations matters more than the destination. First, re-read your agreement and find the contract period and the cancellation clause, because Kitomba's published terms make an early-leaving client liable for the remaining fees of the term. Second, export your client list while your account is fully active, and check what actually came out: names, +64 mobile numbers, email addresses, notes. Kitomba's terms place the responsibility for retaining copies of your information on you, so screenshot or report out anything you cannot export, colour formulas especially. Third, run the new system alongside Kitomba for a couple of weeks and repoint your booking links on Google and Instagram before anything is cancelled. The full playbook is in our guide to switching salon booking software without losing clients.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Kitomba cost in New Zealand?

Kitomba does not publish software prices, even in its home market. Its pricing page, checked in October 2026, lists Lite, Grow, Pro and Enterprise packages with example features based on 3 staff and directs you to request a tailored quote. The only published New Zealand dollar figures are for Kitomba Pay: 1.7% per in-person transaction including GST, 2.7% + 30 cents online, and terminal cost from $0 per month.

Does Kitomba lock you into a contract?

Its published terms state no standard minimum term, but they do say a cancelling client is liable for "all fees due for the remainder of the period of the contract", and for New Zealand clients the contract is governed by New Zealand law. In practice the term is whatever your individual quote and agreement say, so get the contract length and exit terms in writing before signing, and dig out your existing agreement before planning a switch.

What is the closest New Zealand-built alternative to Kitomba?

Timely, built in Dunedin, is the natural head-to-head: hair-and-beauty focused, per-staff pricing published (its page's structured data listed a NZ$42 per month starting price in October 2026), reminders and payments included. It does not match Kitomba's full POS-and-stock depth or its Benchmark reporting, so check which Kitomba modules you actually use before calling it a replacement.

Is there a free alternative to Kitomba for hair salons in New Zealand?

ViteUneCoupe offers a real free plan: unlimited online bookings with 0% commission permanently, a booking page in your salon's name, staff schedules and a client database, with no per-staff fee. The limits are real too: no POS or EFTPOS integration, no SMS (reminders are email only, on the paid plan), and paid plans are billed in euros rather than New Zealand dollars. It replaces the diary, not the till.

Can I export my client data from Kitomba?

Third-party migration guides describe a client-list export from the product, but Kitomba's published terms place the responsibility for retaining copies of your information on you, the client, and we found no export guarantee in the terms themselves. Test the export from your own account while it is still active, well before you give notice, and keep a copy of everything you may need, appointment history and colour notes included.
