Free vs paid salon booking software: what free really means for US hair salons

Type "free salon booking software" into Google and every result says yes, free exists, right before asking for your credit card. The word "free" on a US software pricing page can mean four very different things: a plan that is actually free forever, a trial with a countdown, a $0 subscription that meters you per text and per transaction, or a free tier built so that the one feature you need sits behind the upgrade wall.

This guide is published by ViteUneCoupe, which offers a genuinely free booking system for hair salons with no commission, so we have an obvious interest in this topic. We also have the same rule as the rest of this blog: every claim about another product was checked on that vendor's own site, with the date stated, and when something could not be verified we say so instead of guessing.

The four kinds of "free" in US salon software

Genuinely free plans

A real free plan has no time limit, no card on file to start, and limits you can live with. In the US market, checked in October 2026:

  • ViteUneCoupe: the free plan includes unlimited online bookings with 0% commission, permanently, plus your own booking page, service catalog, staff schedules, client database and calendar. It is not a trial: no card details, no countdown.
  • Square Appointments: Square's own pricing page shows a free tier for solo professionals with an online booking site, appointment reminders and unlimited staff calendars included; cancellation policies with no-show fees, waitlists and multi-staff booking are reserved for the paid Plus and Premium tiers. The exact dollar prices of those tiers load inside Square's signup flow and did not display on the public page when we checked, so confirm them on your own screen.
  • Setmore: a generic scheduler rather than a salon specialist, but its pricing page showed a $0 plan with up to 4 users, unlimited appointments and email reminders when we checked; SMS reminders, deposits and two-way calendar sync require the Pro plan at $5 per user per month on annual billing.

Worth noting: several listicles ranking for this query still describe Setmore's free plan as capped at 200 appointments per month. Its own pricing page said "unlimited appointments" when we checked, which tells you something about how often these roundups re-verify their facts.

Trials dressed as free

These products are good software, but they have no free plan, only a free start:

  • Fresha built its name on free salon software and no longer offers a free plan: its pricing page, checked in October 2026, shows a 7-day trial, then a subscription of 14.95 € per month for an independent professional or 9.95 € per team member (the page displayed euros when we checked from Europe; it localizes currency, so confirm the dollar figures from a US connection).
  • GlossGenius: 14-day trial, then $28, $56 or $168 per month depending on the plan (less on annual billing), checked on glossgenius.com in October 2026.
  • Booksy: 14-day trial, then $29.99 per month plus $20 per additional team member, checked on biz.booksy.com in October 2026.
  • Vagaro: 30-day trial, then a per-calendar subscription; its pricing page localizes by country and would not show us a verifiable US base price, so check it from your own screen.

Nothing wrong with a trial. Just do not plan your salon's budget around the word "free" on the homepage when the real sentence is "free for 7 days."

Free to subscribe, metered to use

The third kind of free hides in the meters. A $0 or low subscription can still cost real money each month through:

  • Per-text charges. Fresha includes 20 free texts or WhatsApp messages a month, then about 0.10 € per text (checked October 2026). GlossGenius includes 500 text credits on its entry plan. A salon sending a confirmation plus a reminder for 200 appointments a month is far past both allowances.
  • Payment processing. Square's free plan is free as software; every card payment carries a processing fee. That is not a hidden cost, it is Square's business model, but it belongs in your math.
  • Marketplace fees. Booksy's optional Boost program takes a one-time 30% of a new client's first visit, capped at $100 (checked October 2026). Fresha's pricing page describes a one-time fee on new clients who first find you through its marketplace, with no fee ever on returning clients, and does not publish the US rate (checked October 2026); this policy has changed more than once over the years, so get the current terms in writing.

Free until the feature you need

The last kind of free is a real free plan whose walls are placed exactly where a busy salon starts to hurt: Square gates no-show fees and waitlists to its paid tiers; Setmore gates SMS and deposits to Pro. That is fair game, every vendor draws the line somewhere, including us: ViteUneCoupe's free plan does not include automatic emails, which live in the Standard plan. The point is to find the wall before you move in, not after.

What free actually includes, side by side

Software Free plan? What the free tier includes First paid step
ViteUneCoupe Yes, permanent Unlimited bookings, 0% commission, booking page, catalog, staff schedules, client database Standard, 29 € excl. tax/month (billed in euros)
Square Appointments Yes (solo) Booking site, reminders, unlimited staff calendars; payments at Square's processing rates Plus tier (price in signup flow) for no-show fees, waitlist
Setmore Yes 4 users, unlimited appointments, email reminders Pro, $5/user/month annual, for SMS and deposits
Fresha No, 7-day trial Trial of the full product 14.95 €/month solo or 9.95 €/member (currency localized)
GlossGenius No, 14-day trial Trial of the full product $28/month entry plan
Booksy No, 14-day trial Trial of the full product $29.99/month + $20/extra member
Vagaro No, 30-day trial Trial of the full product Per-calendar price, localized; confirm on your screen

All figures checked on each vendor's own site in October 2026 and subject to change; the blanks are where a price would not display for us, not a judgment.

When paying for software genuinely makes sense

Free is not a religion. There are honest reasons to pay:

  • You want text reminders. Texts are the default reminder culture in the US, and no serious vendor gives unlimited texts away free. If SMS is non-negotiable for your clientele, you will pay someone: through a subscription (Booksy includes reminder texts), through credits (GlossGenius), or per message (Fresha). ViteUneCoupe will not solve this for you: our reminders are email only, on any plan.
  • You want payments, deposits or no-show fees in the booking flow. That means a payments platform: Square or GlossGenius are built around exactly that. ViteUneCoupe deliberately handles appointments, not money.
  • You run a team with complex needs. Resource management, reporting, payroll add-ons: that is what the $100+ per month tier of products like Boulevard or Mangomint is for, and for a large salon it can be worth every dollar. Our full breakdown of what each setup really costs per month is in the real cost of salon software in the US.

When free is genuinely enough

A solo stylist or a small salon whose actual need is "clients book online 24/7, the calendar fills itself, every client is in one database" can run entirely on a free plan today. That need is precisely the scope of ViteUneCoupe's free plan: your own booking page with your services, prices and hours, unlimited bookings with 0% commission forever, and a client database you own. US phone numbers in +1 format work normally in the client file.

Being transparent about our own model, since we just spent an article dissecting everyone else's: the free plan is the product, not bait. The paid Standard plan, at 29 € excluding tax per month with no commitment, adds automatic emails (confirmation, reminder, thank-you) and ICS calendar sync, and that subscription is what pays for the free plan to exist. It is billed in euros, not dollars, so the exact dollar amount moves slightly with the exchange rate. An anti no-show option with a bank card hold is coming soon in a Standard + Anti No-Show plan at 49 € excluding tax per month. If you are comparing the whole field, our US comparison of hair salon booking software puts all of this next to every competitor's numbers, and solo stylists have a dedicated guide to booking apps for independent hair stylists.

Frequently asked questions

Is there really free salon booking software with no catch?

Yes, with the right definition of catch. ViteUneCoupe's free plan and Square Appointments' solo tier are genuinely permanent $0 plans, checked in October 2026. The "catch" is the location of the paid wall: payments-linked features at Square, automatic emails at ViteUneCoupe. A catch you know about before signing up is just a pricing page.

Why did Fresha stop being free?

Fresha ended its famous free plan and moved every new business to a 7-day trial followed by a subscription (14.95 € per month solo or 9.95 € per team member, shown in localized currency, checked in October 2026). Fresha made no public announcement explaining the change; whatever the reason, the subscription is now the base.

Do free plans limit how many bookings I can take?

The two caps to check are bookings and staff. Among the tools in this guide, ViteUneCoupe's free plan has unlimited bookings, and Setmore's pricing page also says unlimited appointments with up to 4 users. Some generic schedulers do cap monthly bookings on free tiers, so read the limits line on the pricing page, not the headline.

Is a free booking tool professional enough for a real salon?

The booking experience your client sees matters more than what you paid for it. A free plan with your own services, prices, stylists and hours looks exactly as professional as a paid one. What does differ on some free tools is vendor branding on the booking page and missing conveniences like automatic reminder emails, so check those two points before you commit.
